2018 - Red Fang: Head Bang! The World’s First Music Video You Have to Headbang to Play
CLIENT: RED FANG
PRODUCTION CO: WIEDEN + KENNEDY (PORTLAND, OR)
At Wieden + Kennedy, the work comes first. But sometimes that work is the kind where you sort of can’t believe you’re getting paid to do it. As part of our experimental team, we built an app which required you to headbang and simultaneously play a Mortal Kombat II-style game (we created it in the same way, lovingly hand-painting practically shot costumes) in order to hear beloved local band Red Fang’s single, “Antidote”. The idea started out as a desktop one, but we soon realised that for both practical and chiropractical reasons, it made more sense as a mobile app using a phone’s internal gyroscope. This project required careful storyboarding, meticulous pixel art, a thoroughly planned live action shoot, creative use of Unity, constant playtesting, terrible Geocities-style website complete with leaderboard, and bad wigs.
My Role
Executive Producer (for W+K Lodge), Producer (for the app build component), Script Supervisor (for the on-set component).
Scoping
Making sure we had the right creative/technical support for our team including recruitment and contract management
Working with the team on game design, UX and UI planning as well as testing and iteration
Devising post pipeline and tracking assets across live shots, rotoscoped shots, pixel art and keeping the partially remote team in the loop
Keeping the project on track and in budget while keeping true to the core vision (which was massive!) - a balancing act of doing the best creative we could within the confines of time, budget and resources
Stakeholder management: internal and external
